A group of sixth form students on work placements with Milton Keynes City Council were given a unique behind-the-scenes look at how public safety is managed across the city, thanks to a visit organised by Councillor Shazna Muzammil in partnership with Thames Valley Police.

The visit to the CCTV and control room at Milton Keynes Police Station offered students a valuable opportunity to see how different agencies work together to protect and serve the public. From monitoring live incidents to supporting emergency responses, they saw first-hand the scale and complexity of operations led by the police and local authorities.

Councillor Shazna Muzammil, Group Leader of the Conservative Group on Milton Keynes City Council, said:

“The way the Police and Crime Commissioner’s office, Thames Valley Police, and the Council work together to keep our streets safe has always fascinated me. It’s a great example of how strong working partnerships can have a real impact across different teams and processes."

“I was glad to organise this visit as part of our young people's work placements and help them understand the many ways our city is kept safe. I’m incredibly grateful to Jason Owens, Andrea, and the Thames Valley Police team for being so welcoming, engaging, and informative.”

“It was important for the students to see that behind the uniforms and control screens are people who genuinely care about their communities. I hope this visit helped them value the service and sacrifice of our police officers, and that they came away feeling safe, supported, and inspired. Supporting young people is something I care deeply about — and I’ll always do what I can to create opportunities like this.”

During the visit, the students also learned about the role of the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), whose remit spans Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, and Berkshire — making Thames Valley the largest police area outside of London’s Metropolitan Police.

The wider work placement programme, supported by council officers, gave students the opportunity to explore the inner workings of local government, meet councillors and staff, and see how services are planned and delivered.

Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Barber added:

“Engaging with young people and helping them understand the role of policing in our communities is a vital part of building long-term trust and confidence. I’m pleased that these students had the opportunity to see the important work happening behind the scenes and to meet the dedicated officers and staff who serve Thames Valley every day."

“We’re proud to support initiatives like this that connect young people with public service and help them feel informed, safe, and valued.”

There is a quiet unease growing across Britain. Not shouted or dramatic – but unmistakably there. You hear it in town halls, in parks, in WhatsApp groups, over cups of tea, and at the school gates.
