I was proud to join the APPG Women in Parliament panel this week — a cross-party event that brought together women from across the political spectrum to champion rural representation and spotlight the importance of getting more women into politics.

I was the only councillor on the panel — and that perspective matters.

Because being a councillor is one of the most direct and impactful roles in public life. You live and work among the people you serve. You walk the same streets, deal with the same schools, use the same green spaces, rely on the same buses (or lack of them), and feel the same frustration when a pothole damages your car or SEND support is delayed.

You're not far away from policy — you are listening to your friends, your neighbours, your community at large and you're part of shaping that policy every day.

We heard powerful stories from the MPs — about the challenges women face in rural areas: isolation, poor transport, bad broadband, the length and cost of canvassing, and the many internal battles we face around confidence and imposter syndrome.

I spoke about the outdated image of what a political leader is “supposed” to look or sound like. I spoke about those invisible struggles too — the emotional and practical barriers, the lack of support, and the perception that politics is “not for people like us.” But it is.

Most women I know are already leaders — in their work places, in schools, businesses, hospitals, voluntary groups, community centres. You’re already balancing budgets, making decisions, fighting for fairness, and lifting others up.

Being involved in local government for me is also hugely personal. Our homes are here. Our children go to school here. Our businesses are here. Everything we care about is touched by policy — from what shops can open on your high street, to when your bins get collected, how many houses are built in your area, whether your GP surgery stays open, or how your child with special needs gets to school.

This is what local councils do, and if these policies affect your everyday life — you have every right to help shape them.

While everything about politics might feel divisive and discouraging right now, I truly believe we have far more in common than what divides us. That’s why this was a cross-party event — and why I believe we need more women from all backgrounds, all beliefs, stepping forward and shaping the future.

So — if you’ve ever even vaguely considered standing… please do.

Milton Keynes has local elections in May 2026. Get in touch with your local party and they’ll guide you through the process. Or message me — I’ll point you in the right direction.

Also look at groups like 50:50 Parliament  and Elect Her  — they provide amazing support and free training for women exploring political life.

And if you just want a chat — I’m always around, whether that’s over coffee, a walk, or a much-needed glass of wine. 🍷

You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to care. Being able to represent your community is a huge privilege and I hope you consider it!! 😀 💙

Have you felt the drift, that sense that something is being lost? I think I know what it is

There is a quiet unease growing across Britain. Not shouted or dramatic – but unmistakably there. You hear it in town halls, in parks, in WhatsApp groups, over cups of tea, and at the school gates.
